How to Install a Towing Wiring Connector in a Motorcycle Trailer

For a motorcycle trailer, you need four wires to operate the turn signal lights, the brake lights and the running lights. A typical 4-way flat-four connector comes with a green, yellow, white and brown wire already attached. To install one, you need to be able to open the lights on your particular motorcycle trailer, find the appropriate connection points and connect the wires. Be sure to buy a flat-four connector with wires long enough to reach the lights, and leave enough wire to reach the opposite flat-four connector on the towing vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Prewired flat-four connector
  • Grounding lug
  • Wire stripper
  • Screwdriver
  • Extra wire, tie wraps or electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the flat-four connector wiring along the motorcycle trailer and separate the wires to reach their respective connection points.

    • 2

Connect the white wire to the chassis ground on the motorcycle trailer. Place the wire in the grounding lug and install it under any convenient bolt on the trailer. Strip the wire, place it into the lug and tighten it.

    • 3

Connect the green wire to the trailer's right rear light.

    • 4

Connect the yellow wire to the trailer's left rear light.

    • 5

Connect the brown wire to the trailer's running light or license plate light. Depending on the trailer, you may need to multiple this together to different lights, or the trailer may already have wiring between them.

Tips & Warnings

  • When installing the grounding lug, scrape any paint off the trailer chassis where the lug makes the connection.

  • Find a way to secure the wires to your motorcycle trailer frame to keep them from blowing in the wind. Use tie wraps or lash them to the frame with extra pieces of wire. You can also use electrical tape, but how you secure them depends entirely on the design of your trailer. Don't let the wires flap in the wind, as they may break.
