How to Shut Off or Remove OnStar in a 2001 Chevy Tahoe

As a safety feature, Chevrolet's OnStar is hard to beat in a 2001 Tahoe. The subscription-based service can however be pricey, and in case of any accident -- fender bender or worse -- OnStar is automatically alerted. It is also used for navigation, remote start and unlocking, anti-theft recovery and hands-free calling capabilities. You can disable the service by not paying for the subscription, or completely disconnect the wiring harness to ensure it will not be triggered.

Instructions

    • 1

Open and empty your glove compartment while sitting in the passenger side of your Tahoe. On the inside of the glove box you'll find a tab, just a little left of center.

    • 2

Grab the tab you've located, and pull it. This releases the glove box from the dashboard.

    • 3

Allow the glove box compartment to completely lower, as far as it will go. Inside the mounting area, behind the center console, you will see a blue wiring harness connector.

    • 4

Release the retaining tab by pressing on the side of the connector, and pull it apart (this blue connector is what keeps the OnStar service enabled). This completely disables the OnStar's electrical system and connection.

    • 5

Realign the glove compartment, and gently push it back up into the dash. Align it in the mounting bracket and push until it clicks into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • To reconnect your OnStar device, either for the subscription service or in case of selling the vehicle, repeat the same steps but connect the harness instead.
