The classic clown face takes on a horror twist with this killer clown makeup.

Combining the classic clown face with a horror bent can create a particularly fearsome face for a Halloween costume. You want to keep the basic elements of a traditional clown face in place by utilizing a white base, large red smile, decorative eyes and high eyebrows. The twist on the traditional face comes when you add false fangs, point the eyebrow makeup to invoke an angry expression, apply black under the eyes for a skeletal effect and carefully smear the mouth makeup or apply fake blood from the corners of your mouth. Instructions

    • 1

Apply a layer of white base makeup with a triangle or square makeup sponge. Smear the makeup in a thick layer for a bright white complexion. Use a lighter amount of paint for a more transparent white face. You must work quickly at this point because if the makeup dries it may either crack or become difficult to add more without creating smudges. Be sure to cover your eyebrows with white.

    • 2

Trace new eyebrows 1 to 2 inches above your natural eyebrows with a black liner crayon or black makeup and a firm brush. Start above the outside corner of each natural eyebrow and draw upward to a sharp point. The point should be approximately 1/3 of the way in between the outer and inner edges of your natural eyebrows. Bring the liner pencil back down to meet the inner end of your natural eyebrow. The tracing will look like slightly off-center mountain peaks. Use the liner to thicken each new eyebrow to about 1/3 inch.

    • 3

Fill in the space between the new eyebrows and your upper eyelid with the makeup color of your choice. Traditional clown faces use bright colors in this space, but you may also use black for a more skeletal look. Cover your eyelid with makeup, being careful not to get makeup in your eyes. Line the area under your eyes with the same color, gradually extending the makeup to a point approximately 2 inches from your lower lashes at the center in an inverted triangle.

    • 4

Color two red circles on the apples, or rounded part, of your cheeks and one circle on the tip of your nose.

    • 5

Trace a smile around your mouth with the black liner crayon. Make the smile wide, with sharp points accentuating the center tips of your upper lip. Follow the black outline on the inside with a white makeup crayon to create a double-layered outline. Fill in the smile with red makeup. Make two horizontal black lines in the corners of your mouth that indicate mouth scars.

    • 6

Apply the false lashes with lash glue, according to package directions. Apply two coats of mascara to the lashes.

    • 7

Insert the fake fangs. Apply drips of fake blood down one side of your mouth, chin and neck, if desired.

    • 8

Add a cheek scar by drawing a jagged black line about 3 inches long across one cheek. Cross the scar with 1/4 inch vertical stitch marks every 1/2 inch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a wig in a bold, solid color to complete the look. Snarl the threads of the wig or apply dirt to make the wig match the makeup theme.

  • Insert white or even glow-in-the-dark contacts to create a horrifying new eye color. You may need to get a prescription for specially colored lenses, so allow time to plan if you want to use this element.
