How to Frame a Gable Roof End

How to Frame a Gable Roof End thumbnail
Gable roofs are aesthetically pleasing.

Framing the end of a gable roof can be more difficult than framing a regular roof due to the slant, but it is still possible, as the end of the roof uses the same strut setup as the internal braces. It will take a professional contractor to install the gable end, however, as the strut work can weigh close to a ton on larger homes or businesses. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the original blueprint for your building, either from the local property board where the blueprint was filed, your own files, or from the original contractor. Locate the roof design and copy down the original measurements. Just because the blueprints says a part of the roof is X length and Y width does not mean it got assembled that way. You need to perform a visual inspection as well. Make a copy of the blueprint to give to your contractor and another for your files.

Gain access to the attic of your home or business. You may need to use a ladder to reach the attic access door (make sure the ladder is properly seated before mounting it). Ladder accidents are one of the leading causes of injury on a work site. Once in the attic, inspect the internal braces inside, and sketch out the design that is used. The end framing will use the same strut design as the internal braces. Measure the strut length, widths and depths with a measuring tape. Note the measurements on the sketch where the strut is.

Contact a local contracting company that specializes in roofing. Inquire as to its ability to frame a gable roof end. They will ask you for the measurements. Tell them you also have the blueprints and offer to send them a copy. The contractor will then ask to schedule a day to perform an inspection; most will perform this for free. Make a date where you have the day clear.

Take the contractor up to the attic so they can inspect the pre-existing strut braces and the roof end that you wish to frame. Agree upon a price and then inform the building occupants of the construction times. Obtain any relevant work permits from your local government offices as well.
