How to Use the Matrix Weight Machines

How to Use the Matrix Weight Machines thumbnail
Weight machines can take the place of free weights.

Matrix weight machines are primarily found in gyms due to their large size. The prominence of this brand has allowed them to form partnerships with such brands as Lance Armstrong's Livestrong. They come in three forms: plate loaded, weight stacks and cable machines. Most of the cable machines use weight stacks, but they also have adjustable pulleys and hook-on attachments and deserve a category on their own. These machines are the most versatile and can be used to perform exercises from the cable cross to hip adduction.

Instructions

  1. Plate-Loaded Machines

    • 1

Add the weight plates onto the poles that are designated for holding the plates when lifting. Some machines may have one, while others may have two.

    • 2

Get into position to lift on the machine. For many, this will be sitting or lying down, but a few models, such as the squat/lunge machine, require you to be standing.

    • 3

Adjust the machine if the feel isn't correct. On most machines, this will be a yellow tab that you pull. Depending on the model, pulling this tab can allow you to adjust the height of the seat or the position of a thigh pad.

    Weight Stacks

    • 4

Set the machine to the desired weight. This is done by pulling the yellow magnetic pin from the weight stack and setting it in the hole under the desired weight you want to lift.

    • 5

Get into position as you would with a plate-loaded machine. Check the feel.

    • 6

Adjust the seat or thigh pad just as you would with the plate-loading models by pulling the yellow tab and setting it to your liking.

    Cable Machines

    • 7

Adjust the cable pulleys to the proper height for the exercise you will be performing. These are also marked by yellow tabs. Pull the tab out and slide the pulley up or down. If you are performing an exercise that requires pushing or pressing motion, then the pulleys will probably be lower on their rails. If you are performing a pulling motion, then you will have the pulleys higher up.

    • 8

Adjust the weight once you have the pulleys in place. These Matrix machines use a weight stack, so pull the pin from the stack and set it in the hole under the desired weight. If you are using two pulleys, make sure that the weight on each one is the same.

    • 9

Move yourself into position. Do this by taking hold of the handles that connect to the pulleys and stepping either backwards or forwards depending on the exercise. If performing a pulling motion, you will likely be behind the pulleys. If the exercise requires a pushing or pressing motion, then you will likely be in front of them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since you will most likely see Matrix weight machines in a gym setting, feel free to ask a trainer if you are not completely sure how to work a machine.

  • Remember with the cable machines that there are multiple attachments for handles.

  • In addition to weight machines, Matrix also make weight benches, power and weight racks and cardiovascular equipment.
