Staining wood can be done with a wide assortment of wood products to make mismatched furniture look more uniform. The process of staining wood is actually not as difficult as some would-be craftsmen tend to believe. It actually is as simple as purchasing the stain that you want to apply and using it on the wood. Instructions

    • 1

Sand the wood down. No matter what kind of wood you have, it will need to be as smooth as possible to get the maximum effect. When done sanding, soak the wood in a pre-stain conditioner. This type of conditioner will seep into the wood, causing it to even out even more, which will make it easier to stain.

Choose your wood stain. The stain that you use will have to be darker than the two woods that you are staining in order for the stain to get maximum uniform color. The stain canisters will tell you what kinds of woods they will work best on, so make sure you pick a stain that best fits your wood types. If the stain that you want does not state that it works on your wood types, you may still use it but it will take more time to soak into the wood.

Put on your rubber gloves before staining the wood. Because of the chemical nature of the stain, contact with human skin could burn or discolor, so take adequate measures to prevent this from happening. Use a sponge to rub the stain on in concentric circles to apply. Keep the sponge moving in circles as you move it all around the wood.

    • 4

Wait for about five to 15 minutes for the stain to soak in. If the stain you are using is not noted as compatible with the wood you are working with, give it 10 to 30 minutes to soak in. If the stain is not set in very well, repeat the staining process until the color is clearer.
