A soft-bristle brush can restore carpet pile to its original direction.

Storing any kind of furniture or heavy objects in a carpeted room will inevitably result in indentations left in the pile of the carpet. While it is unlikely that your furniture will actually tear through the carpet or cause permanent, irreparable damage, the indentations look sloppy and draw unnecessary attention to themselves. Repairing these indentations involves getting the pile to return to its original position, and there are two methods you can try. Depending on the depth of the indentation, you may find that one works better on your carpet than the other. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Brush

    • 1

Brush the pile of the carpet back toward its original position with a soft-bristle brush. Pull as much of the pile back as you can with the brush and your hands.

    • 2

Lightly spritz the carpet with clean water; do not saturate the carpet, as this can cause stains or molding.

    • 3

Continue to brush back and forth across the pile, dampening the carpet as necessary, until the pile returns to its original position.

    • 4

Blot up any excess water with a clean towel before it soaks into the carpet.

    Heat

    • 5

Dampen the indented area with club soda. Again, do not saturate the rug.

    • 6

Cover the dampened carpet with a towel. Set your clothing iron on a low heat setting and run it repeatedly over the dampened area. The heat will pull the pile back toward its original position.

    • 7

Remove the towel and inspect your work. Use a brush if necessary to help fluff the pile back into position. Repeat ironing until the carpet returns to its original look.

    • 8

Dry the area with a clean towel.
