How to Make a Hunter S. Thompson Costume
When you want to get away from typical Halloween costumes such as ghosts, vampires or witches, choose something totally unexpected and even startling. Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson is recognizable to many people because of his loud Hawaiian shirts, aviator sunglasses and cigarette holder. Create this costume with items from your own wardrobe, a thrift store or a party store.

- Hawaiian floral shirt
- Khaki shorts
- Tall colorful socks
- White tennis shoes
- Fisherman's hat
- Aviator sunglasses
- Cigarette in holder
- Press pass
- Safety pin

Wear a floral Hawaiian-style shirt and a pair of khaki shorts as the basis of your Hunter S. Thompson costume. Add a pair of tall, colorful socks and white high-topped tennis shoes.

Don a fisherman's hat and a pair of aviator sunglasses. Look for a pair of these sunglasses with colored lenses, such as green or pink.

Make a press pass out of a rectangular piece of paper. Simply write "Press Pass" in black along the top of the paper with "Hunter S. Thompson" beneath it. Not only is this a nice touch, it will help make sure everyone at the party can identify your costume. Attach the press pass to your shirt with a safety pin.

Even if you do not smoke, carry a cigarette and a cigarette holder with you. Use a real cigarette, or purchase a fake one in the accessories section of a costume shop. You can pick up a cigarette holder as well at a costume or party store.
