How to Install Duralast Brake Pads

by Matt Scheer

Duralast produces brake pads to replace original equipment brake pads on numerous vehicles. The brake pads feature a slotted friction block that is formulated to each vehicle model's braking specifications. Although the brake pads vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle, the process for installing them is similar throughout. Two brake pads fit on the inboard and outboard sides of the rotor. A caliper holds them in place. Expect the installation process to take 10 minutes for each wheel.

Step 1

Loosen the lug nuts on the front passenger side wheel. Set the jack below the lift guide notches behind the wheel on the frame rail. Raise the jack until the wheel hangs off of the ground. Remove the lug nuts. Pull off the wheel.

Step 2

Spin the steering wheel clockwise to jut the rotor outward to make it easier to reach the inboard side of the caliper.

Step 3

Remove the bolts securing the caliper to the rotor with your socket wrench and ratchet. Pull off the caliper from the rotor.

Step 4

Pull the inboard and outboard brake pads out of the caliper with pliers.

Step 5

Insert the inboard Duralast brake pad into the caliper. Grip the caliper with the caliper clamp so that the drive shaft presses the inboard Duralast brake into the caliper piston. Tighten the clamp until the inboard Duralast brake pad is flush with the caliper. Remove the clamp.

Step 6

Insert the outboard Duralast brake pad into the outboard side of the caliper. Seat the pad in the slots of the caliper.

Step 7

Remount the caliper to the rotor. Reinstall the wheel. Lower the vehicle.

Step 8

Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the other wheels.
