How to Butt Ends of Elastic When Sewing
There are two methods for sewing elastic together in the process of garment making. Overlapping, which is better for soft elastics, and the butted method, which is preferable for firmer elastics. The advantage to the butted method is that it leaves no lump showing on the outside of your waistband. On garments with thinner or finer material this means you get a much smoother overall look. Butt ending can be done whether you are hand sewing or using a machine.

1
Place the two ends of elastic together and pin them into place so they do not move when you are sewing.
-
2
Thread your needle using a thread that is strong enough to hold the elastic firmly and will not break. Bring your needle from underneath through one piece of the elastic at the end. Now make a single straight stitch across the "butt" and into the other piece of elastic coming out underneath.

3
Make a stitch across the underneath of the butt and come out the other side so you are back on the first piece of elastic. Repeat this all the way along the line of the "butt." Make the stitches very close together to make a stronger join.
-
4
Place the needle and thread through your last stitch in the line and make a knot to tie off the end. Cut the thread.

If your are machine sewing use an over-locking zig-zag stitch.
Stretch the elastic a few times before you start sewing just to soften the material.
