Snowmobiling is a great way to experience the outdoors during the winter. In order to ensure a safe trip, it is important to maintain the machine's wear parts periodically to avoid a potentially dangerous break down in the wilderness. The snowmobile's clutch needs to be rebuilt every few years with normal use. Removing the clutch is necessary to perform this task. With the right tools, it can be accomplished in about two hours.

  • Snowmobile owner's manual
  • Socket set
  • Clutch puller
  • 12-point socket

    • 1

      Remove the belt guard and the snowmobile's drive belt. Because the removal process varies according to manufacture, refer to the owner's manual for the process.

      Remove the plastic plug from the belly pan. This will provide access to the side of the clutch. Some modern designs don't require this step as you will have access the clutch by opening the hood.

      Loosen and remove the bolt and lock washer which is securing the drive clutch to the crankshaft.

      Insert -- and gently tighten until snug -- the clutch puller into the hole provided by removing the bolt in the previous step. The arms of the puller attach to the back of the clutch. Using a wrench, tighten the puller until the clutch comes off.

      Remove the clutch from the snowmobile. It is important that you make note of the washers used to space the clutch from the snowmobile and reassemble in the exact same fashion.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may have to gently tap on the end of the puller to assist in the removal.
