The Water Dispenser Is Broken on My Whirlpool Refrigerator

The Water Dispenser Is Broken on My Whirlpool Refrigerator thumbnail
A leaky water dispenser is common after changing the filter.

Some side-by-side Whirlpool models have a water dispenser. This water dispenser is hooked up to a water supply through a series of vinyl supply lines. The water travels through a filter to remove any impurities from the water. If any of the lines or the filter is faulty you may experience leaks down the side of the fridge. Always check the filter first if you have recently changed it, since air may be stuck in the lines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Filter Problems

    • 1

Place a container in the water dispenser, or hold it there.

    • 2

Press down the water lever for five seconds and let the water flow into the container.

    • 3

Release the container for five seconds. Press down the lever again. Continue until water begins to flow and four gallons of water has passed through the lines.

    Leaking Lines

    • 4

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall.

    • 5

Lean the refrigerator back with the help of a partner to expose the water supply lines underneath the fridge. Set a wood block near the rollers of the fridge to hold it in place. Have your work partner hold the fridge as well to prevent accidents.

    • 6

Locate the leaking tube and release it from its coupling by squeezing it with a pair of needle nose pliers.

    • 7

Cut off the leaking section of tubing with a utility knife.

    • 8

Push a quick connect coupling (available from most hardware stores) onto the cut end of the tubing. Cut another length of fresh tubing long enough to connect the water supply and attach it.
