Making Scented Body Lotion

Body lotion can be a treat for your skin, adding extra moisture and a luxurious feel. You may choose to make your own lotion to reduce cost or to control the ingredients that ultimately end up on your skin. There are two recipes outlined below. The first uses a simple lotion base that can be purchased and scented with essential oils. The second is entirely homemade and comprised of a base of sweet almond oil and beeswax, with a distinctive rose scent.

Things You'll Need

  • Unscented lotion base
  • Unscented store-bought lotion
  • Essential oil
  • 1/4 cup sweet almond oil
  • 1/4 cup rosewater
  • 1 tbsp grated beeswax

Instructions

  1. Scented Body Lotion Using Purchased Base

    • 1

Buy an unscented lotion base from a soap-making supplier or craft store. If you have difficulty finding such a base, you can buy any unscented lotion from your local drugstore. If you do purchase a lotion, confirm its scent is actually neutral; many lotions that are claimed to be unscented have a faint chemical smell.

    • 2

Purchase an essential oil that is a scent of your liking. Essential oils are plant extracts in a liquid form and are available in a wide variety of scents. A natural health store might be your best bet to find essential oils if you are having difficulty tracking them down. Some stores will offer scent blends and will have testers available so you can choose the scent that's perfect for your lotion.

    • 3

Mix the unscented lotion with the essential oils in a large mixing bowl. Use a whisk to ensure the scent is distributed evenly. Start with approximately 1/4 an ounce of oil per 16 ounces of lotion, and increase as per your preference.

    • 4

Wash your jar with warm, soapy water and dry completely. Transfer your mixed lotion to the jar and seal.

    Rose-Scented Body Lotion

    • 5

Heat the almond oil and beeswax in a double boiler over simmering water. Stir until beeswax has melted.

    • 6

Remove beeswax and oil from heat and slowly stir in rosewater, stirring constantly. Allow the mixture to completely cool. Stir occasionally during cooling time.

    • 7

Add vitamin E oil to cooled mixture, and stir well. Transfer the mixture to a clean and dry jar and seal.
