How to Clean Dusty Curtains

Keep curtains clean by dusting them at least once a week.

Dust is an accumulation of small, solid particles that are created in our home environments from flakes of dry skin shed by us and our pets, textile fibers and plant pollen. Dust can form on all indoor surfaces, including furniture, frames, bedding and curtains. If the dust isn't removed, it can produce allergic reactions in some people. Curtains need to be cleaned of any dust that has collected on them at least once a week to prevent such occurences and to keep the window coverings looking their best.

Things You'll Need

• Feather duster
• Dusting cloth
• Vacuum
• Damp cloth
• Electromagnetic fiber duster

Instructions

1. Brush the dust off your curtains using a feather duster or microfiber dusting cloth. Start at the top of the curtains and work your way down so that the dust falls onto the parts not yet dusted. A vacuum with brush attachment can also be used to remove dust. Wand extenders can be attached to a vacuum hose to remove dust from hard-to-reach areas.

2. Dust curtain hems and folds with a feather duster. Dust tends to accumulate the most in these areas.

3. Moisten a cloth and wipe down the curtains to remove any remaining dust.

4. Repeat the process to clean and dust the backside of the curtain.
