1
Leave a gap in the tiles the size of the soap dish when tiling a new shower. Most soap dishes can be purchased with the same size and footprint as the tiles you are installing.

2
Apply mortar directly to the back of the soap dish and press it firmly into the gap. Center the soap dish in the space for the best results. Use masking tape to help secure the soap dish to the wall while it dries.

Remove one or a few tiles from an existing shower to install a soap dish. Drill into the tile straight to the wall in multiple places on the tiles. This will help break the tile away from the substrate. Use a hammer and chisel to gently tap out the old tile and mortar behind it.
