I Can't Connect to an ATA VoIP Phone
IP telephony is an increasingly popular form of telephone service. Rather than a traditional landline telephone cord, voice over IP (VoIP) telephony uses a high-speed Internet connection to make and receive calls. Because phone calls require a relatively small amount of bandwidth, VoIP providers can offer relatively low rates for their service. If you are trying to use an ATA VoIP phone with your IP telephony service and you're not getting a dial tone, the issues can be resolved typically in just a few basic steps.

1
Reset your home Internet network by unplugging the power cords of both your Internet modem and your VoIP router. Leave all devices unplugged for a full 30 seconds, and plug them all back in. Allow the network 5 to10 minutes to reboot and check your VoIP service again. A simple reset can often resolve this and other VOIP networking problems. If there is still no dial tone some further troubleshooting is required.

2
Unplug the Ethernet cable that attaches your VoIP router to the ATA VoIP phone's Ethernet port, and check the Ethernet connector for any damage. If the cable is badly damaged, it may need to be replaced with another one. But assuming the cable looks okay, plug it back in securely in both the router and the phone. Again, reset the network in the manner described in step 1, and check the phone for a dial tone.

3
Detach the Ethernet cable that connects your Internet modem to your router from the router side. Plug it directly into the ATA phone's Ethernet port so that you have a single Ethernet cable attaching your modem to your ATA phone. Again, reset the network and check for a dial tone. This is known as "bypassing" the router. If you now hear a dial tone on the ATA phone, the issue is with the router you are using at home, and it needs to be either reconfigured for your VoIP service or replaced altogether. If there is still no dial tone, you may be experiencing an Internet service outage and you would need to report the issue to your Internet service provider, or your VoIP provider.
