How to Kill Lice on Hats, Helmets & Hard Surfaces

Itchy head lice are transmitted through direct contact or the sharing of personal items such as hats and other headgear. Once a lice infestation occurs, the pests spread rapidly through the host's home, including onto furniture and other hard surfaces. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, chemical fumigants are not appropriate for treating lice infestations in the home. Lice can be eliminated by laundering items and performing routine cleaning tasks.

Things You'll Need

  • Washer and dryer
  • Disinfectant cleaning spray
  • Vacuum cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Wash infected hats, helmets and other smaller objects in the washing machine for 20 minutes, using the hot water cycle. Non-washable items can go in the dryer on high heat for 20 minutes. Temperatures of 125 degrees F or higher are lethal to lice.

    • 2

Spray hard surfaces with a disinfectant cleaning spray. Leave the spray alone for a few minutes, then wipe it off with a paper towel. Dispose of the towel in an outdoor trash receptacle.

    • 3

Thoroughly vacuum hard floors and all infested areas of your home. Throw the vacuum cleaner bag in an outdoor trash disposal unit to eliminate lice from your house.
