DIY Prom Decorations
From the DJ to the refreshments, prom can be an expensive event. Instead of making this rite of passage even more unaffordable for teen guests by spending a fortune on decorations, create your own. Teens often enjoy participating in the creation of prom decorations, and take pride in seeing their work on display come their special night. As your planned prom approaches, put some of your most creative students to work to make the decorations for the event. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Build a backdrop for the prom. Regardless of the theme, you can set the scene with a backdrop. Cover the walls with butcher paper, or use a white sheet as your backing, and create a scene representative of your theme with paint. Select the most artistically skilled students to complete this, asking for recommendations from the art teacher.

Create a starry sky with twinkle lights. Creating mood-lighting can be inexpensive and simple with twinkle lights. Punch twinkle lights through sheets of black bulletin board paper. Suspend these sheets of light-infused paper from the ceiling, covering all or part of it to build your overhead decoration.

Make a garden with tissue paper flowers. Cut petals out of tissue paper, and glue them around a yellow construction paper disk to create light flowers. Place these creations along your walls, or use them to jazz up boring table skirts around the space.

Create a balloon arch as a dramatic entryway display. Tie helium-filled balloons tightly together to create a balloon column. Craft this column by tying four balloons together as tightly as possible, then gathering four more balloons and attaching them together tightly before placing them atop your first set. Continue until you have a column that is twice the desired height of your arch. Attach both sides of the column to the ground 5 to 10 feet apart from each other to complete the design.

Change the lighting color at your venue with gels. Even yellowed gym lights can be transformed into something beautiful with gels. Select a color appropriate for your theme. For example, if your prom theme is under the sea, opt for blue lighting. Purchase theater gels, or thin sheets of colored plastic, to place over your light fixtures. Attach these color-enhancers to each of your lights to finish your prom space.
