How to Use Gummy Bears to Make A Charm

How to Use Gummy Bears to Make A Charm thumbnail
Gummy bear charms are cute and easy to make.

If you love eating gummy bears, perhaps you'd also love to wear them. The brightly colored candy bears look adorable as charms on a necklace, a bracelet, or even a keychain.

You can make your own charms with resin and a mold, but a cheaper and simpler way to make gummy bear charms is by using real gummy bears. With a little varnish or resin, turn the bears into wearable and whimsical charms. You can even experiment with other types of gummy candies.

Things You'll Need

  • Gummy bears
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Varnish or resin
  • Newspaper
  • Chain link rings (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Poke a hole with the threaded needle through each bear you'd like to use and allow the bear to hang on the thread. For a charm, a good place to sew the hole is in the ear; that way you can fit a small chain link connector into the ear. Alternatively, you can use a toothpick, but a thread will give you a smaller hole for the chain link, if that's what you'd prefer. If you are using toothpicks, spear each bear through the stomach with a toothpick.

    • 2

Dip each bear individually into the resin or varnish until coated. Do not let the bears soak in the varnish longer than a second or two.

    • 3

Remove the bear from varnish allow to dry for an hour. If you've used toothpicks, you can stick the ends of the toothpicks into an eraser, a bit of clay, or some craft foam. If you've used a thread, lay down newspaper and tie each end to something to create a clothesline above. This could be two chairs or the legs of a table.

    • 4

Insert your chain link into the hole (if its in the ear) and close. Attach to a charm bracelet or add to a necklace chain. If you've used toothpicks, remove the toothpick. Rethread your needle and push the threaded needle through the hole left by the toothpick. Repeat this on multiple bears to make a string of bears for a necklace, bracelet or keychain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not let the bears soak too long in the varnish, they can begin to dissolve.

  • You can use many different types of gummy candy, feel free to experiment.

  • Make sure the bears are completely covered in varnish. You can give them a second coat if you aren't sure. If they aren't, they can rot.
