How to Invent Catholic Traditions
Roman Catholicism or the Roman Church is the name given to the branch of Christianity that emerged out of Rome. It is the largest branch of Christianity in the world. A myriad of celebrations and holidays are attributed to the church, and you can use some for your family celebrations as well. You can start certain filial traditions to help draw your family closer. You can set these as weekly or yearly traditions, or however you want to establish them.

Celebrating a Child's Patron Saint Day
-
1
Naming a child after a saint is a long-held tradition in Catholic families. Connecting the child with the patron saint is one way to help the child learn about his faith.
-
2
Determine when the child's patron saint Feast Day falls. Mark this on the calendar.
-
-
3
Locate what the patron saint was known for. St. Francis of Assisi was known for his humility and his love of animals. Certain saints have certain practices and patronages. Have the child make something that represents the saint or perform and act that the saint would have performed.
Family Meal
-
4
Celebrate a weekly family meal. You can do this with the extended family. This will bring grandparents and other relatives closer.
-
5
Celebrate by having fish on Friday during Lent. Call family members and go to a fish fry. You can even rotate the event among different parishes.
-
6
Have a game night at the same location or another location after the meal.
Midnight Christmas Mass
-
7
Gather the family on Christmas Eve. Opening gifts from siblings is a practice you can start.
-
8
Serve a traditional late dinner. Catholic canon states that you will not eat one hour prior to receiving communion. A good idea for this is sandwiches that are put away at 10 p.m. or so.
-
9
Meet the family at the church or leave as a group and sit together. This again brings the family closer. This is a tradition that is a little better for older children.
