How to Troubleshoot a Gestetner

Gestetner copiers are part of the Ricoh family of copiers. Though the model names are different, Gestetne, Lanier and Ricoh copiers are exactly the same. Like all electronic devices, Gestetner copiers may have occasional issues that require troubleshooting to determine if the issue can be easily resolved or if it needs to be serviced by a trained technician.

Run copies to test for copy quality. If your Gestetner can make copies, make several copies and examine the output. If you notice lines across the copies, the issue is most likely either dirty platen glass or a scratch on the drum. If there is dirt or excessive dust on the platen glass, use lint-free paper towels and glass cleaner to clean the glass. If the glass is clean, you will need to examine the drum. Open the front panel and inspect the drum for dirt or scratches. If your drum is scratched, you will most likely need to replace the drum. If it is dirty, use a can of compressed air to remove any dust or dirt from the drum.

Check feeder tires for wear. Gestetner copiers have several pairs of feeder tires that are used to move paper through the machine. Made of rubber, feeder tires show excessive wear by becoming smooth, pitted or cracked. Inspect the feeder tires in the document feeder, paper trays and in the bypass tray. If the feeders show wear, you will need to replace them.

Check the quality and condition of your paper. Paper that is stored in humid areas will tend to jam more often, as the excess water held in the paper causes a build up of static electricity when passing through the fusing section of the copier. If your paper feels damp, is dirty or is not a flat and wrinkle-free, replace with new paper. Storing your copy paper in a climate controlled room will help eliminate humidity issues and will help reduce paper jams and copier fuser-section issues.

Tips & Warnings

  • In April 2007, Gestetner became part of the Lanier copier family. All information about Gestetner copiers can be found on the Lanier website.

  • Before working on the inside of your copier, it is always safer to turn off the power and unplug the copier from the power source.
