Homemade Toothpaste With Glycerin

Making your own toothpaste is easy and saves you money

Glycerin is a sweet, viscous liquid available at almost any drug store. It is one of the primary ingredients in homemade toothpaste, and acts as a sugar-free sweetener and lubricant that gives the paste the correct consistency. Making your own toothpaste can save you a lot of money. In fact, by 2010 prices it can cost as little as $2 to make enough toothpaste to last a family for a year. Prepare this recipe in minutes using common household ingredients and modify it to suit your taste.

Things You'll Need

• Baking soda
• Salt
• Glycerin (also called glycerine or glycerol)
• Peppermint oil (or other flavor such as cinnamon)
• Salt mill or pestle and mortar
• Bowl
• Squeezable bottle or screw-top pot

Instructions

1. Take about a dessert spoon of salt, grind it up as fine as you can with a salt mill or pestle and mortar.

2. Mix one part salt to six parts baking soda in a bowl. The salt is the abrasive part that removes built-up food and the baking soda acts as cleanser.

3. Add a few drops of peppermint oil or whichever flavor you prefer.

4. Add glycerin a little at a time, mixing until the consistency is smooth and paste-like.

5. Spoon the mixture into a screw top pot or squeezable bottle and use twice a day to keep your teeth shiny, healthy and clean.
