Instructions

    • 1

Fold the cotton fabric in half. Fold it in half once more, so that you are left with four equal-sized, folded sections.

    • 2

Find the inner, folded corner of fabric. From this corner, measure 3 inches along each edge. Mark these measurements using your pencil.

    • 3

Tie one end of your string to your pencil. Hold the pencil at one of the 3-inch measurements marked in Step 2.

    • 4

Pull the string taut toward the inner corner of folded fabric. While holding the string taut between the pencil and the corner, move your pencil in an arc shape from the first marked measurement to the second.

    • 5

Find the outer, non-folded corner that adjoins the inner corner from Step 4. From this corner, measure 5 inches toward the other non-folded, adjoining corner. Mark this measurement using your pencil.

    • 6

Draw a straight line from the measurement made in Step 5 to the edge of the shape drawn in Step 4. Cut along this line through all the layers of folded fabric.

    • 7

Tie the end of the string to your pencil once more. Hold the string at the same corner as in Step 4. Line up the pencil at the inner, bottom folded corner of fabric. Move your pencil in an arc shape from this corner toward the opposite corner. Cut along this drawn line, making sure to cut through all the layers of folded fabric.

    • 8

Cut along the arc shape drawn in Step 4, creating the neck hole for your cape. Unfold your cape and lay it flat on the floor.

    • 9

Slightly fold the edges of the cape to create a hem, pinning the hem as you make your way around the cape. Sew over the hem, removing the pins as you sew.

    • 10

Cut two strips of felt, each 2 inches by 4 inches. Cut one short edge of each strip into a half circle-shape.

    • 11

Cut two squares of felt, each 1 inch by 1 inch. Lay these squares aside for now.

    • 12

Cut the 20-inch strand of ribbon into two 10-inch pieces. Lay one strand near the center of the circular edge of one of the strips of felt. Glue this strand into place, using fabric glue. Repeat for the second ribbon and second strip of felt.

    • 13

Glue one square of felt (from Step 11) over each glued section of ribbon. Allow the glue to dry. Then, sew the felt squares and the edges of ribbon into place. The cape is now ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using a darker color fabric, you may find that chalk creates more visible marks than pencil.

  • If you have a serger, you may find it easier to finish the edges by serging them, rather than sewing a hem.
