How to Use a Metal Frame Bunk Futon Bed

Using a metal frame bunk futon bed is in many ways the same as using a standard bunk bed frame. The main difference is in how the mattress is supported. Standard mattresses have a rigid internal structure, so they need only rails to hold them up. A futon lacks this internal structure and would sag through the rails on a standard bunk bed. Bunk futon beds, which are usually made of tubular metal, need support for the entire mattress. The hardest part of using these is putting them together in the first place. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the area where you intend to install the bunk bed, plus about three feet to every side.

    • 2

Set one end piece of your bunk bed frame so it leans against the wall.

    • 3

Attach one end of the bottom mattress support panel to the end piece you stood up in Step 2. Although how to do this varies from model to model, it usually involves screwing in a bolt using a hex wrench. At this time, tighten the nut only until the bolt protrudes just slightly out of the nut.

    • 4

Stand up the remaining end piece at the foot of the mattress support panel you just installed. Attach it to the panel as appropriate.

    • 5

Slide the upper bunk panel into place between the end pieces. Bolt it in place as you did in Step 3.

    • 6

Tighten all your nuts and bolts using the hex wrench. As the bolts tighten, you may need to hold the nuts still using your pliers.

    • 7

Maneuver the assembled bunk bed frame into its final position, then slide the futon mattresses into position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some bunk bed frames will have additional components, often ladders and shelves. Follow manufacturer directions to add these features.
