How to Rent a Trailer for a Car thumbnail
If you're moving, you can rent a trailer for your car.

If you're moving or need to transport some property, renting a trailer for your car may suit your needs, especially if you want to bring your car along with you. Although cars aren't known for being typical towing vehicles, as are SUVs or pickup trucks, they are capable of towing up to roughly 3,500 pounds, depending on the size and condition of the car. If you don't own a trailer, you can rent one from your local Uhaul company.

Instructions

  1. Rental Procedure

    • 1

Determine what type of hitch you'll need depending on the weight of the trailer and the size of your car by looking at Uhaul's online Select-A-Hitch Guide. You will either need a regular-duty hitch, either a Fixed Tongue or Receiver-Style Sportframe, or a heavy-duty hitch called a Frame Hitch. You can also make an appointment for a free towing inspection at your local Uhaul if you need help determining what your car needs.

    • 2

Make an installation appointment for a hitch, if your car doesn't already have one, at your local Uhaul. You can schedule an installation online or by phone.

    • 3

Reserve a trailer online or by calling Uhaul, using a credit card or debit card. You may need to leave a deposit down for part of the rental costs.

    • 4

Get insurance or damage coverage on the trailer you're renting, as most insurances and credit cards don't cover damages to a rented trailer. Uhaul's plans also cover the property that is being towed by the trailer, up to a certain dollar amount.

    • 5

Arrive at Uhaul to pick up your trailer, double-checking that your trailer is properly hooked up before driving away with it.

    • 6

Return the trailer when you are done using it. You will have a set day and time to return the trailer to avoid additional charges. Depending on your needs and the agreements made with the rental agency, you may return it to a different location or you will return it to the same one.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch Uhaul's online instructional videos which will show you how to properly hook up a trailer to a car and safely haul the trailer.

  • It is recommended that you rent a transmission cooler. According to Uhaul, "The #1 cause of automatic transmission failure is overheated transmission fluid."
