How to Repair a Power Chair

How to Repair a Power Chair thumbnail
Medicare may help with the cost of repairing your power chair.

Your power chair is classified as "durable medical equipment," according to Medicare. Since your power chair is considered a medical necessity, Medicare may help cover the cost of all repairs to your device (see Resources). However, an owner may wish to troubleshoot and resolve minor problems before scheduling a repair or replacement of his power chair.

Instructions

    • 1

Resolve an incorrect wiring of the battery. Your power chair's battery should be wired as follows: red to positive (+) and black to negative (-).

    • 2

Resolve an interruption in power to the battery charger. Check the indicator light on the charger. A solid red light indicates full power to the charger. A dim or flashing red light shows an interruption in power. Press the "Reset" button to restore power to the charger.

    • 3

Check the driving axles for dirt and debris. Use a clean cloth to remove dirt and debris from the axles. Dirty or obstructed axles may hinder the performance of your power chair.

    • 4

Reset the circuit breaker to restore power to an inoperable power chair. Press the "Reset" button, located on the battery pack, to restore power to the device.

    • 5

Check for a loose connection between plugs and connectors. Use a clean cloth to remove debris from all plugs; tighten all loose connections by hand.
