How to Remove the Centerpiece From a Sink Base

Most sinks have a removable drain assembly, which creates a water-tight seal between the plumbing and the sink. Many sinks also have a plunger that moves up and down to seal the drain assembly shut, ensuring that water and other items do not escape from the sink. Over time, the water-tight rubber seal between the plumbing and sink will break down, causing the sink to leak. You must first remove the drain assembly to replace and restore the water-tight seal. • 3

Slide the metal strap and the connecting clip off of the horizontal rod inserted into the drain.

    • 4

Loosen the pivot nut on the back of the drain using your fingers or an adjustable wrench. Remove the horizontal rod from the drain.

    • 5

Remove the plunger from the top of the sink.

Loosen the large nut on the tail pipe, directly below the sink using channel lock pliers.

    • 8

Pull the washer and gasket down and out of the sink. Push upward into the sink on the entire tail-piece assembly to loosen the drain assembly ring, visible from the top of the sink.

    • 9

Unscrew the tail piece and then remove it. Remove the drain assembly ring from the top of the sink.
