How to Locate Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors are early warning devices designed to notify the occupants of a dwelling of the presence of smoke. Advanced smoke detectors can also alert users to the presence of unwanted gases such as carbon monoxide. Positioning smoke detectors in the house is a simple matter with the basic rule of thumb being to place a detector in each bedroom and common area. Your chances of surviving a house fire increase with each smoke alarm installed. Does this Spark an idea?

Tips & Warnings
Some counties and districts have specific requirements regarding the minimum number of smoke detectors and the placement of those detectors. Consult your local government for basic requirements if you do not wish to install a smoke detector in each main room. Test the alarms monthly and replace the batteries every six months to ensure that the alarms are working properly.
Do not place an alarm near doors, windows or vents to avoid drafts that could pull smoke away from the alarm. Avoid positioning alarms in corners, alcoves, or at the top point of a pitched roof to prohibit air pockets from forming around the alarm. Alarms are best mounted on the ceiling at least 4 inches away from the nearest wall. Wall-mounted alarms need to be approximately 10 inches from the ceiling and centered on the wall. Mount alarms on vaulted ceilings approximately 1 foot from the highest point of the ceiling.
