How to Paint an Artsy Face

Painting a face in an artistic style can seem like an overwhelming endeavor, but it doesn't have to be. Decide what you are trying to express and what style you want to work in to get an idea of the parameters of your painting. This will make the possibilities seem less infinite and overwhelming.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the "look" or style that you are going for. "Artsy" can identify virtually any artistic style. To have an easier time approaching the creation of your artsy face painting, you should have an idea of the style you are going for: hyper realistic, pop, abstract, black and white, a person, place or thing, or any of hundreds of other styles.

    • 2

Prepare your supplies. Don't focus just on face paints; use makeup, glitter, stickers, feather, glue, fake hair, eye lashes, and just about anything else you can think of to make your face painting truly artistic.

    • 3

Prepare your face. Wash it, dry it off, and apply a makeup primer or lotion and wait for it to dry. If you have a base color, such as white for skull makeup, apply it now and seal it with translucent powder.

    • 4

Apply your makeup and face paint. Don't rely solely on face paints; use your other supplies, including normal makeup to create effects. For example, if you paint yourself as a Picasso, you could use face paint to make large spots of pink on your cheeks or you can use a (probably safer) commercial blush and apply it with a poofy brush over your base coat. For freckles or lines, you can use eyeliner as well as face-paint pencils. For anime eyes, makeup can only take you so far. Using fake eyelashes as well as painting will allow you to create a large-eyed look more easily than by painting alone.

Use your bone structure. If you paint a landscape on your face, use the shape of your nose or mouth to be mountains.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many face paints have dangerous ingredients such as lead in them and usually contain no warnings. For a safer experience, use damp eye shadow as paint and apply it with sponges, or create your own organic face paint. There are a few safe commercial face paints. Invest time into researching them to find the brand that is best for you, particularly if you are painting children or paint your face often.
