How to Participate in Extracurricular Activities

Soccer is a commonly offered extracurricular activity.

Extracurricular activities encompass a variety of educational opportunities that happen outside the classroom. Each school offers a different list of activities and imposes different requirements for joining any given team, group or club. Participating in extracurricular activities is a rewarding experience that builds friendships and develops skills related to the activity you choose.

Instructions

1. Visit your school's student center or main office and ask to see a list of extracurricular activities. Colleges and universities have student centers; grade schools have main offices. If you are unsure of the location, ask a teacher to direct you where to go on campus.

2. Study the list of extracurricular activities and underline or highlight those that interest you. These activities likely will include sports, such as swimming, soccer and basketball; clubs and teams such as the debate team, drama club and glee club; and organizations such as student government.

3. Weigh any special considerations as you choose your activity. Is this something you can do well? Is it something you might enjoy? Does it require a tryout and a certain level of physical fitness (like most sports)? Is it free or does it require the purchase of a field trip or uniform? If the information is not listed next to the activity, ask someone who works in the office to get this information for you.

4. Come prepared to the meeting of your chosen activity. Information on times and place the activity meets will be given to you along with the list of activities your school offers. Some activities require you to join or try out at the beginning of a school year or semester. Other activities will allow you to join late; these typically are non-sports clubs and groups. Wear appropriate clothing for the activity. If possible, contact the teacher who runs the activity and ask her what you should bring to the meeting.
