DIY Floating Pool Centerpieces

DIY Floating Pool Centerpieces thumbnail
Floating flowers make a delightful pool centerpiece.

Floating pool centerpieces need to be designed to be viewed from above, as that will be vantage point of most viewers. Some flowers and other components that are heavy will sink after a short time. If a theme or colors are part of the party experience, these can be incorporated into a floating pool centerpiece. Construct the base at least two days ahead of the party so the hot glue can cure completely. All components must be balanced, so the centerpiece will not capsize.

Instructions

    • 1

Glue florist foam to the water container. Affix these attached items to the larger styrofoam base. Use a hot glue gun to adhere these materials together.

    • 2

Glue two or four small tiki torches into this floating base, near the center of the composition. Remember to accentuate balance in your floating creation. Position the tiki torches and flowers in a symmetrical arrangement. Whatever components are placed on one side of the arrangement, put identical elements on the opposite side; this creates equilibrium.

    • 3

Cover the base with greenery. Banana leaves work well. Pin them with florist pins.

    • 4

Saturate the foam base with water and place it in the pool.

    • 5

Work on the rest of the arrangement in the pool so the flowers will be balanced. Some flowers weigh more than others and need to be positioned opposite each other to achieve stability through this weighted balance. A large headed flower on one side calls for a corresponding flower weight on the opposite side.

    • 6

Insert flowers and greenery into the florist foam and the styrofoam and use wire to anchor them to the arrangement.

    • 7

Add airy plants to your centerpiece. These will not add much weight but will give it volume.

    • 8

Use clear fishing line to secure your floating creation to the center of the pool. Attach the line to a brick that will stay positioned in the center of the pool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Artificial flowers and greenery can also be incorporated.

  • Place foam in a floating inflatable ring, if you like or if it matches your theme.

  • Candles may be incorporated instead of the small torches.

  • Styrofoam is toxic to the planet, dispose of properly.
