How to Polish a Stainless Steel Gun

How to Polish a Stainless Steel Gun thumbnail
With proper care, a stainless-steel firearm can look like new indefinitely.

When properly cared for, stainless-steel firearms have the advantage of being virtually impervious to the effects of weather. While stainless steel will not rust, many firearms are not actually completely stainless steel; some are alloys or have only a stainless-steel finish. Additionally, some parts of the firearm, such as the trigger guard, may be nickel-plated and will rust if the finish becomes compromised. With proper care, cleaning and the application of a quality stainless-steel polish, a stainless-steel gun can look like new indefinitely.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the gun cleaner (found at gun shops and department stores) to the metal surfaces of the gun to prepare the metal for polishing. For best results in removing dirt and gunpowder residue, allow the cleaner to set according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Wipe the gun cleaner off with a cloth and apply the polish to the metal, rubbing it in thoroughly with a clean cloth.

    • 3

Wipe off the polish with a cloth and buff (rub) the metal parts of the gun using only extra-fine steel wool. Wipe with a clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using steel wool to polish a firearm (either stainless or blued) use only extra-fine, as coarser grades can scratch the metal. Do not use it on painted surfaces, as it will damage the finish.
