How to Protect Swimwear from Chlorine

How to Protect Swimwear from Chlorine thumbnail
Chlorine affects the color, texture and fit of swimwear.

Chlorine eventually takes a toll on even the best-made swimsuits. The chlorine starts to fade the dye on your swimsuit the moment it comes in contact with it. The amount of chlorine, frequency of exposure, temperature and swimsuit fabric all contribute to the fading and deformation of the suit. Swimsuits worn in chlorinated swimming pools on a frequent basis rarely last more than one season. While no suit lasts forever, regular rinsing and washing can help. A consistent and diligent care routine will help your suit maintain its color and fit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse your swimsuit in cold water as soon as possible after swimming to remove most of the chlorine before it can damage the fabric.

    • 2

Wash your swimsuit after every two to three uses. Wash it by hand. Use only cold water. If you feel you must use a detergent, use a mild one designed for delicate fabrics.

    • 3

Lay the suit on a flat surface to dry. Never place it in the dryer. This can make the fading effects of chlorine even worse.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some swimsuits come in chlorine-resistant fabrics, but these are not impervious to repeated exposure to chlorine and will eventually fade.

  • Polyester swimwear is more durable than nylon and will withstand the effects of chlorine better.

  • The combination of chlorine and heat in hot tubs is even worse on swimsuits than swimming pools.

  • Only use cold water to wash your swimsuits. Warm water deforms the fibers and alters the fit and elasticity of the suit.
