Instructions

    • 1

Sketch some ideas on paper to visualize what design you want to achieve for your decal project. If you plan to create a theme for a room, think about which objects in the room you want to decorate. Decals come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

    • 2

Buy decals that coordinate with a room's theme or hobby items such as model trains. Many online merchandisers sell decals. Home and garden stores also offer a variety of decals.

    • 3

Clean or paint the surface where the decals will be applied. You'll need a clean, smooth surface.

    • 4

Cut the decals apart, one by one, using the scissors. A paper backing and clear sheet sandwich the decal, allowing it to maintain its adhesiveness until apply it to a surface.

    • 5

Tape the decals onto your surface, placing them in the areas you want to design. Move them around to experiment with various patterns, if you want. This will give you a chance to move the decals around freely without actually applying them.

    • 6

Draw fine pencil dots or "x" marks to indicate corners or specific positioning of your decals so you know exactly where to place the decals.

    • 7

Remove the taped decals from the surface and peel away the paper backing.

    • 8

Position the decal in between your drawn dots or "x" marks. Hover the decal over the area momentarily until you reach position. Make sure the sticky side faces the surface.

    • 9

Press the decal onto your surface. Use your hand or any other flat, smooth object, such as a ruler, to gently rub the decal onto the surface. Work from the middle toward the edge and smooth out any bubbles.

    • 10

Peel the clear backing away from the decal, making sure that the decal does not come with it. Lightly anchor the decal by pressing with one hand while peeling away the backing with your other hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many decals are removable and, sometimes, even reusable. Therefore, you can change your décor as often as you would like.

  • Handle decals with care, as intricate patterns can tear.
