How to Lose Weight on 800 Calories

Diets that are very low in calories provide overweight people with a quick way to jump-start their weight-loss program. These diets often include ingesting no more than 800 calories a day, along with a strict exercise plan. Typically, these diets are not used forever, and once the initial diet period ends, the dieter should adopt a more moderate diet and exercise program. These 800-calorie diets are not for everyone; doctors recommend that teenagers, the elderly and pregnant women not follow a diet of reduced calories at all.

  1. Talk to a doctor or health care professional before beginning an 800-calorie plan to make sure you are healthy enough to undertake extreme weight loss. This sort of diet can potentially be dangerous if not done carefully, and can cause strain on the body if not closely monitored. These diets should only be done under the supervision of a physician or dietitian to prevent malnutrition.

  2. Adopt a meal plan that includes many low- and no-calorie items. These will include items such as broccoli, clear liquids, spinach, cucumbers and broth. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

  3. Take a multivitamin daily to ensure that your body is getting all the essential nutrients it needs to sustain life. Low-calorie diets are typically low in many vitamins and calcium, which your body needs to function.

  4. End the diet after no more than 6 months. Very low-calorie diets are not meant to be followed for a long period of time; the typical duration is 3-6 months.
