Host a proxy server and unblock access to websites.

If you want to provide a means for people to access websites that are blocked by the network they use to access the Internet, you can host a proxy server. Users can navigate to the proxy server and use its interface to browse websites. As long as your proxy server website is not blocked by the network, a user will have access to all Internet sites permitted by the proxy server. There are several proxy server scripts that make it easy to set up and provide a proxy server to others.

Instructions

    • 1

Register a domain name and point the name to the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your server. Download and install proxy server software on the server such as CGIProxy, PHProxy or Glype.

    • 2

Browse to the domain you chose and run the proxy software as the administrative user. Change the password and then follow the menus to configure the look and feel of the proxy. For example, most proxy scripts provide specific areas in the user interface where you can display advertisements and make money when users click on the ads.

    • 3

Test the proxy server from a different computer by entering the domain name and browsing to different websites using the proxy server user interface.

    • 4

Register the domain name of the proxy server with public proxy directories such as "www.proxy.org" to advertise its availability.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or web hosting provider may not allow proxy server hosting. Check the ISP's or web host's Terms of Service before hosting a proxy server.
