How to Add Weight to a Truck

How to Add Weight to a Truck thumbnail
Most pickup trucks are weighted more in the front than the rear.

Having two-wheel drive on your pickup truck means you may slip and slide when driving during the snowy winter months. You can improve the traction of the tires on the road by adding weight. Adding weights will compress the back of the vehicle and allow the rear tires to better grip the ground. This will require you to figure out how much weight to add to the back of your truck.

Instructions

  1. Sand or Salt Bags

    • 1

Set the sand or salt bags over the rear axle. Place one or more sand bags on each side of the truck bed.

    • 2

Wrap a rope around each bag multiple times. Tie the end of the rope to the frame of the truck to prevent the bags from moving.

    • 3

Test drive the truck and readjust the weights as needed.

    Concrete Blocks

    • 4

Place concrete blocks over the rear axle on each side of the truck bed.

    • 5

Insert a rubber strap through the holes in the concrete block and attach the ends to nearby attachment points. This will keep the blocks from moving in a sudden stop.

    • 6

Test drive the truck and readjust the weights as needed.

    Toolbox

    • 7

Mount a truck bed toolbox to the rear of the cab. Follow the instructions to secure the toolbox to the sides of the truck.

    • 8

Fill the toolbox with tools if they will need to be used. Or fill the toolbox with sand bags or salt bags to add weight.

    • 9

Test drive the truck and add more weight if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a truck that has front-wheel drive, additional weight may not be needed because the weight of the engine provides extra grip.

  • Positioning the weight behind the rear axle may lift the front of the vehicle.
