Use a clean rag to wipe down the part of the engine you are working on.

If you own a Honda 400 ex ATV, you will need to check on the valves every 30,000 miles. The valves are an important part of your 400 ex engine because they control the flow of fuel and air into the engine. The valve cover is also important because it prevents debris from entering the valves and ultimately entering your engine. If you need to remove the valve cover on your 400 ex, there are few simple troubleshooting steps you will need to follow.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the entire valve cover area. The point of the valve cover is to keep crud out of your valves, so wiping it down first will help keep any debris that has built up on the valve covers.

    • 2

Loosen the five bolts that secure the valve cover to the engine compartment with a 6mm wrench. If your 6mm wrench seems to small or if you have corrosion or other build up on the bolts, try a 7mm wrench.

    • 3

Turn your wrench in a counter clockwise motion for each of the nuts.

    • 4

Remove the nuts from the valve cover with your hands, and set them aside where they will not be lost or knocked into the engine compartment.

    • 5

Pull the valve cover straight up once all the nuts are removed.
