How to Start a Flooded Johnson Outboard

Johnson outboard motors are available in a variety of sizes and are used on boats with inboard engines. Johnson motors come in either two- or four-stroke versions. When the Johnson motor is flooded it will not turn over. Fortunately, a flooded motor is easily remedied. By taking a little time to let the outboard engine drain and doing some coordinated work with the choke and idle, the Johnson motor is ready to start and take you out onto the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the choke to "on" and turn the ignition switch. Bring the throttle lever to neutral.

    • 2

Push the throttle lever all the way forward to the full and open setting. Pull the choke off. Turn the ignition and try cranking the engine.

    • 3

Pull the throttle lever back to neutral and turn the ignition once again. It may take two or three turns of the ignition switch at this point, but the process drains the engine and brings it to the point where it starts again.
