Homemade Plywood Shelf
Although not as attractive as other wood choices, plywood shelves make for an inexpensive and durable storage solution. Since they're best used for garages or other non-public storage areas, they make a great project for getting started with do-it-yourself. Since the finished project will be out of the public eye, you're free to make mistakes you'd be better off avoiding for more prominent furniture. Set aside an hour or two for each shelf you want to build. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Plywood sheet, 1/2 inch by 12 inches by 64 inches
- 4 plywood sheets, 1/2 inch by 12 inches by 12 inches
- Power saw
- 2 plywood sheets, 1/2 inch by 12 inches by 3 inches
- Nail gun with 1-inch nails
- 8 3-inch wood screws
- Power drill
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut the 12-by-12-inch sheets in half along the diagonal, making a total of eight right triangles.
-
2
Take two triangles and one 12-by-3-inch sheet.
-
-
3
Set the sheet on edge along one of the 12-inch sides of the triangle. Its ends should be flush with the ends of the triangle. Nail it in place with a line of four evenly spaced nails.
-
4
Set the second triangle on the opposite side of the 12-by-3-inch strip, aligned exactly like the first triangle. Nail it in place as you did the first.
-
5
Repeat Steps 2 through 4 to build three more brackets.
-
6
Mount the brackets to a wall stud in a level line using the 3-inch wall screws and a power drill.
-
7
Lay the long plywood sheet on top of the brackets. In most cases you won't need to nail it in place. Friction and the weight of what you store there will do this for you.
