How to Make a Jean Shirt Into a Pillow Case

Personalized pillows are great gifts.

Making old clothes into pillowcases is a one way of recycling unwanted items. Pillowcases are generally a standard size and shape so many pieces of clothing can be put to use. Jean shirts are hard wearing and ideal to use on cushions as well as on pillows and as curtains. Choose a shirt with a funky design or pattern to give your room more impact.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• Chalk
• Scissors
• Straight pins
• Needle
• Thread

Instructions

1. 

   Accurate measurements will result in a professional result.

   Measure the pillow you want to cover with your measuring tape. Write down the dimensions.

2. 

   A shirt with nice buttons will make your pillow case eye-catching.

   Place the shirt on a flat surface with the buttons running down one side. Measure the shirt to make sure it is big enough. Draw the pillow dimensions onto the shirt with your chalk. Ensure that the buttons are about 10 cm from the top as you use these buttons to get the pillow in and out of the cover.

3. 

   Pins with colored heads are easier to see than straight silver pins.

   Use your scissors to cut the shirt 5 cm outside of the line, so you have ample material to sew. Turn the material inside out and use straight pins around the edges.

4. 

   Pockets can add to the design.

   Stitch all the way around the edge of the material by hand or with a sewing machine. Choose thread that's the same color if you don't want to see the stitching, choose a bright color if you want to make the stitching part of your design.

5. Turn the pillowcase right side out and put your pillow inside. Do up the buttons and enjoy your creation.
