1996 Monte Carlo Dash Lights Won't Work

If the dashboard lights on the instrument cluster of your 1996 Monte Carlo are malfunctioning, there are two possible reasons: the dash light fuse has blown out or the dash light bulbs have burnt out. Replacing the fuse is very simple. Replacing the bulbs is slightly more complicated as you have to remove the upper dashboard on the driver's side to access the instrument cluster, but it is still a fairly straightforward task.

Instructions

  1. Replacing Dash Light Fuse

    • 1

Turn the Monte Carlo's engine off and locate the instrument panel fuse block to the far left of the steering wheel.

    • 2

Pull off the cover labeled "Fuses" to reveal the fuses.

    • 3

Remove the fuse in slot number 1. Replace it with a new 15A fuse.

    • 4

Place the cover back onto the instrument panel fuse block. If the lights are still not working, then there is an issue with the bulbs.

    Replacing Dash Light Bulbs

    • 5

Turn the engine of the Monte Carlo off and open the hood. Be sure the engine is cool before working. Use a socket wrench to manually remove the negative terminal from the Monte Carlo's battery.

    • 6

Lower the steering wheel and remove the four screws from the bottom of the lower trim below the instrument cluster. Remove the three screws from the upper trim above the instrument cluster. Pull the trim out of the vehicle.

    • 7

Remove the four screws securing the instrument cluster shield into place. Remove the instrument cluster shield by sliding it out of the vehicle.

    • 8

Remove the four screws holding the instrument cluster to the Monte Carlo and pull it out slightly. Reach behind the instrument cluster to disconnect the two electrical connections. Pull the cluster out and pull the old bulbs out of their sockets. Install the new bulbs by pushing them into the sockets until they click into place.

    • 9

Place the cluster back into the vehicle and reinstall the screws. Reattach the protective shield and its screws. Reassemble the dash trim around the instrument cluster and reconnect the battery.
