How to Make a Master Yoda Costume

Master Yoda, with his small, yet powerful, form and confused method of talking, is among the most beloved characters from the Star Wars franchise. Options for a Yoda costume could be making a hood with Yoda ears attached, or purchasing a Yoda mask to give the complete appearance of the Master Jedi. Using an old karate uniform (called the gi) can help give the appearance of the traditional Jedi attire, and if the costume-wearer doesn't have an old karate uniform, secondhand stores are a great place to look for one.

Things You'll Need

  • Karate uniform
  • Dark brown fabric dye (washing machine-safe)
  • Brown graduation gown or hooded cloak
  • Green hooded jersey
  • Green felt or stiff fabric (match the jersey)
  • Scissors
  • Paper and pencil
  • Needle and thread
  • Matching green face paint (optional)
  • Wood cane

Instructions

    • 1

Dye the karate gi in the washing machine following the instructions on the washing machine-safe brown fabric dye. This keeps the risk of accidental mess or stains minimal, and makes clean-up easier since the washing machine drains on its own and will thoroughly rinse and wring out the karate gi. Dry completely.

    • 2

Sketch a Yoda ear on the paper, using the pencil and a picture of Yoda for an example. These should be several inches long, and taper to a pointed tip. Cut out the pattern, then cut four pieces from the green fabric using the ear pattern as a guide.

    • 3

Sew the ears together, with the right sides facing, leaving the bottom edge open. Turn the ears right-side out.

If using a very stiff felt, sew the ears close to the edge with wrong sides facing instead. To determine the right position for the ears, have the costumer wear the jersey and make a small pencil mark on both sides, where the ears will be sewn. Sew the ears to the hood of the jersey, stitching along the open end of the ears.

    • 4

Put on the jersey with the Yoda ears sewn onto the hood and then put on the now-brown Karate uniform and tie the belt but slide the knot around to the side or back and tuck the ends under the edges of the belt. If desired, paint the face green to match the jersey and Yoda's skin.

    • 5

Put the cloak or robe on over the karate uniform. Wearing the hood of a cloak is optional; Yoda is rarely seen with the hood over his head. Hold the cane to complete the Yoda costume.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternatively, a toy lightsaber can be carried instead of, or in addition to, the cane; perhaps attached to the belt.
