How to Assemble Flags at Home thumbnail
Your flag can be as complex as you wish.

Assembling a flag at home can be a craft project, or an attempt to save money. Buying flags can be expensive, and the simple design of national flags mean that even a relative novice can assemble a flag. You can design your own flag as an activity with your children, or alternatively put together an existing flag for a particular celebration. With just a little money and time, you can create a professional looking flag which can be flown with pride.

Instructions

    • 1

Design your flag on a piece of paper. The standard ratio of a flag is 3:5, so it is best to stick to this ratio when designing your flag, although you are free to experiment if you wish. Your flag can have writing, images or a combination of both.

    • 2

Buy a blank nylon flag to base your flag on. Although you can make your own base, it is far simpler to buy a flag and add your design to it. If you want to make your own base, buy a piece of cloth and make an edge by folding over half an inch on each edge and sewing this down. This will prevent fraying. The standard flag size is 3 feet by 5 feet, although you can deviate from this if you wish.

    • 3

Cut out the sections of nylon from the other colors you wish to use. Lay them on the flag before you attach them so that you can make sure you are happy with the design.

    • 4

Spread the fabric glue onto the back of the pieces of nylon and place them onto the flag. Repeat until all the nylon pieces are placed.

    • 5

Place a piece of greaseproof paper on top the flag and iron over the fabric.

    • 6

Wait for the fabric glue to dry, and turn the flag over. Repeat the process of placing all the nylon pieces on the reverse so that the flag looks correct from both directions.
