If you're looking for an unusual party theme that will be the talk of the town, host a Belmont racing party. Schedule your event to coincide with the Belmont Stakes, the third race in the famous Triple Crown; this race is high stakes and exciting, plus it will be televised, so you can watch it as the main event of your party. Because your party theme isn't common, you probably won't be able to find items like preprinted invitations or decorations, but you can always make your own after a trip to the craft store. Instructions

    • 1

Make invitations by folding heavy paper and gluing a printed message to the inside. Decorate the front of the card with rubber stamps of horses. Title the invitation "An Afternoon at the Races" and ask guests to dress in "race-worthy" attire that they would wear if they were actually attending the race in person.

Write a list of all the contenders in the Belmont Stakes on a piece of poster board and make it into a chart with information about each horse's races and times. Hang it in the room near where you'll be watching the race so your guests can choose their favorite.

Bake or buy a sheet cake and ice it with green frosting, as if it were the grounds at Belmont Park. Crush up wafer cookies and mix the crumbs with brown sugar to look like dirt. Spread this mixture in a large oval, representing the track at the park. Write "A Day at the Races" or "Place Your Bets" in the center of the race track. If you can find small plastic horses, place a few of them on the cake as well. Serve the cake on plates with horses on them.

Give each guest the same amount of fake money when they arrive. If you have enough, try to give each guest $1,000 or more. Explain that they can "bet" on a horse with their money and there will be prizes for the big winners. Take bets without hassle by allowing each person to pick which horse he thinks will win and putting all his money on it. If you're interested in the math involved with odds, you can be more complicated with the betting. After the race, split the money between the guests who picked the first, second and third place horses. Give prizes such as a trophy from the thrift store, a fake crown for the Triple Crown, or a small stuffed horse. Hand out favors to all the guests, such as small wind-up horse toys.
