How to Make Crocheted Headbands & Barrettes for Infants

How to Make Crocheted Headbands & Barrettes for Infants thumbnail
Bald, fuzzy or wispy, making a baby's hair look cared for is a challenge.

As cute as your baby is all by herself, there are times when you want to dress her up. An older child with more hair might get pigtails, but the only option for a baby with little or no hair may be a soft headband. Crochet the headband using soft yarn and a few basic stitches you can learn from any online or printed crochet source. Make the band snug enough to stay on the baby's head, but not tight. Decorate it with lace or ribbon gathered into a flower. For a baby with a little more hair, crochet a yarn flower to stitch onto a felt-and-hook closure spot that will gently grip the baby's wisps like a barrette.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft sport-weight yarn, such as bamboo rayon
  • Size G crochet hook
  • 6 inches 1/2-inch lace or soft ribbon
  • Sewing needle with thread to match lace
  • 1/2-inch felt-and-hook closure spots
  • Sewing thread to match yarn

Instructions

  1. Crocheted Headband

    • 1

Chain 6. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and three more chains across. Chain 1 and turn; work single crochet across. Repeat three more rows of single crochet.

    • 2

Work other patterns in groups of five or six rows, such as two rows of double crochet or shell stitches --- chain 3 to turn, work three double crochet in the center stitch of the previous row, chain 1, double crochet --- but single crochet will give the most stretch for a nice fit. Continue until the headband sits snugly but not tightly around the baby's head just where a hat band would sit.

    • 3

Slip stitch the ends of the headband together.

    • 4

Run the sewing thread along one edge of the lace or ribbon and draw it up to pull the strip into a fluffy shape. Tie off the thread, but before cutting it, use it to tack the blossom to the headband at a spot just off the center front.

    Soft Barrette

    • 5

Chain 6 with the yarn and join the ends to form a ring.

    • 6

Chain 3 and work 4 more double crochet in the same chain; chain 2 and slip stitch in the same first chain to form a petal. Repeat in each chain around the starting ring, forming six petals that should bunch and overlap.

    • 7

Stitch the crocheted flower to the felt side of the closure spot.

    • 8

Slip the hook side of the closure spot under the baby's hair or a part of it. Press the decorated felt side to it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can crochet daintier decorations out of crochet cotton, but the softer the yarn, the stretchier a headband will be, and the more comfortable on the baby's head.

  • Add ribbons or buttons to center your blossoms, but take care that they're completely secure, especially on the barrette, so they don't pose a choking hazard.

  • Remove the barrette by peeling off the decorated felt side and gently sliding the hooks to the ends of the baby's hair.
