If you enjoy being able to see the person you're chatting with online, consider connecting via webcam. The webcam connection allows you to chat and view the person you are communicating with on your monitor. Although creating a webcam connection may seem intimidating at first, connecting your webcam is actually quick and simple using an instant messaging program.

Insert your webcam installation CD into your computer's CD drive. Follow the prompts to install the webcam software. Connect the device to your computer via the USB cord included with the webcam.

Place the camera at an angle in front of you to ensure the other person can see your face.

Download an instant messaging service integrated with webcam. There are several choices available at no cost, such as AOL, Google Chat and MSN. Note that the person you wish to connect with must also have the same program.

Display your contact list once you have set up an account with the messaging service.

Start the webcam process. If you are using Google Chat, click the camera icon lnext to the contact's name. If using MSN's chat, click "Start a video call," and with AIM right-click the contact and then click "New Video Call" from the menu.
