Instructions

    • 1

Drape garland around the top of the mantel. Garland is made of a variety of materials, including pine, candy and Christmas cards, and can be used to complement your room's décor. For instance, a nautical theme could benefit from a garland of seashells. Hang your garland high enough so that it will not come close to the fire's flames.

    • 2

Hang a large wreath above the fireplace. Decorate the wreath with large bows or ribbon. If you already have an object hanging above the mantel that cannot be moved, decorate it with garland or ribbon.

    • 3

Place Christmas lights around the mantel. Doing so will add a light effect to the area that will complement the fire.

    • 4

Place Christmas-themed candles on top of the mantel. For instance, candle holders that feature a Christmas design will add to the holiday feel of the mantel. You could also place candles that are gold, silver, white, red or green to boost the Christmas effect.

    • 5

Place Christmas flowers on top of the mantel. Poinsettias and chrysanthemums are often used during the holiday season. Place them in decorative pots and set then on the mantel. Avoid placing lit objects, such as candles, close to them.

    • 6

Sit Christmas decorations on top of the mantle. For instance, you could hang ornaments from the mantel in the same way as you would stockings. You could also place ceramic pine trees, Santa Clauses and other objects that pertain to the holiday on the mantel, with garland nestled in between.
