How to Transfer a Boat Registration in Michigan
When you purchase a boat in Michigan, you will need to transfer the registration into your name unless the vehicle is exempt from registration. You do not have to register a boat that is 16 feet or shorter that has no motor and that is only used for private recreation. Canoes and kayaks of any length are exempt as long as there is no motor affixed to the craft and you use it only for your private enjoyment.
Things You'll Need
- Title, if the boat is titled
- Existing watercraft registration, if available, or bill of sale
- Names and addresses of seller and buyer
- Boat's hull identification number
- Proof of insurance, if required
- Photo identification

1
Complete the back of the title to transfer ownership of the vehicle from the seller to you, the new owner. If the boat is not titled, complete the back of the boat's existing registration document to transfer ownership. If the existing registration slip is lost, create a bill of sale that lists the date, the full names and addresses of the buyer and seller, as well as the boat's year, make and model, hull identification number and registration number (if known).

2
Contact your insurance agent to determine if insurance is required on the craft. You may choose to insure the boat even if it is not required. Ask for proof of insurance from the agent.

Bring the title, registration or bill of sale, proof of insurance and your photo identification to the nearest Michigan Department of Motor Vehicles to complete the registration transfer within 15 days of purchasing the boat. You will have to pay a small fee to transfer the registration into your name.
