How to Fly the Texas Flag
The first national flag of the Republic of Texas was approved in 1836. Referred to as "National Standard of Texas," it was a yellow star on a blue background. The current flag, called the "Lone Star" flag, was introduced in 1838. The colors of the flag stand for bravery, loyalty and purity. Citizens of Texas love their state flag and display it proudly.

1
Fly the Texas flag with the white stripe up. Fly it upside down in the event of an emergency. Display the flag on a wall or window with the star on the left. If it is displayed vertically, place the star at the top, and the white stripe on the left.
-
2
Only fly the flag during daylight hours between sunrise and sunset and in fair weather. A waterproof flag can be flown during inclement weather. If any flag is flown at night, it should be illuminated.

3
The Texas flag can be flown at the same height or lower than the U.S. flag. If flown on the same flagpole, it should be under the U.S. flag. The U.S. flag should be hoisted first, and lowered last.
-
4
The Texas flag can not be used as material to make clothing, bedding, napkins or any other item. It cannot be used as bunting in front of a podium, vehicle or home.
-
5
Display the state flag to right of a speaker, above and behind him. If the U.S. flag is also displayed, then the state flag is on the speaker's left and the U.S. flag is presented on his right.
-
6
Carry the Texas flag on the marching right when you are carrying it in a procession among other flags, unless the U.S. flag is present. In that case, the U.S. flag should be to the right.
-
7
When hoisting or lowering the flag, or any time the flag is passing, citizens present should stand at attention, facing the flag and place their right hand over their heart. Remove any head covering and hold it to your left shoulder. If a person is not a citizen of the state, they should stand at attention.
-
8
Fly the flag at half-staff whenever the governor issues an order. Raise it to the top, then lower it to half-staff. At sunset, raise it again, then lower and withdraw it.
